TOPCRET MICROCEMENT

Microcement Australia: The Complete Guide to Uses, Types and Benchtops

Microcement is a thin, seamless cementitious coating applied directly over floors, walls, benchtops and outdoor areas, usable within 24 hours of installation and requiring no demolition of the existing surface. This guide is written specifically for the Australian market: how microcement performs against local conditions, from coastal humidity to harsh UV exposure, what it costs here, and how it compares to alternative benchtop materials now that engineered stone has been phased out.

Whether you’re renovating a kitchen in Melbourne, extending an alfresco area in Perth, or specifying finishes for a Sydney hospitality fit-out, this guide covers everything: definition, product types, application methods, and advantages, backed by TOPCRET’s certified installer network and VOC-free formulations.

What is microcement?

Microcement, also known as micro concrete, micro-screed, or micro-overlay, is a highly versatile cementitious coating that’s well suited to the way Australians actually build: open-plan living that flows straight from the kitchen onto the deck, and surfaces that need to handle both sun and salt air. It applies seamlessly across floors, walls, benchtops, and outdoor entertaining areas alike, in both residential and commercial projects.

As a leading microcement supplier in Australia, Topcret works with architects, builders, and homeowners who need one continuous surface that can run from an internal living space straight out to an alfresco zone or pool edge without a visible break. Its durability holds up to harsh UV exposure and coastal humidity without losing its finish.

Microcement has caught on across Australian renovations and new builds for its sleek, minimalist look that suits everything from a Bondi apartment fit-out to a Queenslander renovation. With an extensive range of colours and finishes, it adapts to warm-climate palettes as easily as cooler, contemporary ones.

Because it’s applied as a thin coating over existing tiles or concrete, microcement also cuts down on demolition waste and renovation time, a real advantage when you’re working around Australia’s tighter trade schedules and building costs.

Whether you’re renovating a bathroom, extending outdoor living space, or fitting out a new commercial build, microcement gives Australian homes and businesses a surface built to handle the outdoor lifestyle.

Microcement composition and Features

Microcement primarily consists of cement, fine sand, polymers, and pigments. These ingredients are meticulously blended to produce a consistent paste that can be applied to various surfaces, including floors, walls, and furniture.

Some of the standout features of microcement include:

  • Durability: Microcement is a robust and long-lasting material that can withstand daily wear and tear, knocks, and abrasion.
  • Water-Resistance: Totally waterproof, applicable to any wet area.
  • Flexibility: Unlike other coatings, microcement is flexible and doesn’t crack easily, making it ideal for surfaces that might experience movement or vibrations.
  • Minimal Thickness: Microcement is applied in very thin layers, making it a suitable choice for renovations without adding excessive weight or thickness to the existing structure.
  • Wide Colour Range: Owing to the pigments used in its composition, microcement is available in a broad spectrum of colours and shades, allowing for customisation and adaptation to various decorative styles.

Microcement Surface Finishes

The variety of finishes achievable with microcement is influenced by the chosen textures (refer to the types of microcement) and the specific varnishes or sealants applied. These factors play a pivotal role in determining the final look and feel of the microcement application.

Given that microcement is inherently porous, it’s essential to use a sealant or varnish. This not only safeguards it from contaminants but also ensures the treated surface is water-resistant.

Microcement, as a material, offers a vast array of finishes and textures. Here are some of the many possible finishes you can achieve with microcement:

  • Polished Finish:This is a favourite for wall claddings. Achieved by polishing the surface after the microcement has set, it’s perfect for those aiming for a sleek, contemporary look.
  • Aged & Polished Finish: Similar to the polished finish, but with an added twist. The surface is aged using a chemical treatment before polishing, giving the wall a more rustic charm.
  • Tinted Finish: By blending microcement with pigments, you can achieve a tinted finish. This imparts a unique colour to the wall cladding, making every floor or wall a central piece in the decorative scheme.
  • Glossy Finish: Its shiny, robust surface makes it ideal for floors, walls, and ceilings. It’s also easy to maintain and clean. However, its intense shine might overshadow the colours and other nuances.
  • Matt Finish: Matt microcement is among the many finish options available. Characterised by its polished yet understated look, it’s perfect for minimalist or modern spaces. If you’re looking to give your home or business a sophisticated touch, matt microcement is an excellent choice.
  • Satin Finish: For those seeking a smooth and elegant finish, satin is the way to go. It’s known for its soft appearance and feel. Given its polished nature, it’s also relatively easy to clean. Satin finish stands as a chic alternative to waxed or glossy finishes. One of its main benefits is that it doesn’t require frequent waxing or polishing. It’s also less prone to smudges or fingerprints. Suitable for a wide range of applications, including floors, walls, and countertops, it’s gained immense popularity in both commercial and residential settings.
  • Non-Slip Matt Finish: Retains the matt aesthetic while ensuring slip-resistance. It’s imperative to use the Topsealer Anti Slip polyurethane sealant for this finish.

There are numerous other finishes and textures achievable with this versatile material. The ones listed above are just a few of the most favoured ones. If you’re considering using microcement for your project, it’s advisable to consult a professional to help choose the right finish and texture for your needs.

Microcement cost: All you need to know

Factors Influencing Microcement Pricing

When considering the pricing of microcement, several pivotal factors come into play:

  • Surface Condition and Preparation: The current state of the surface is crucial. Surfaces in disrepair necessitate more preparation, which can escalate costs.
  • Complexity of the Work: The application process varies based on the area’s intricacy. For instance, a flat surface’s cost differs from that of a staircase or pool, with more complex areas demanding precision and time, influencing the final price.
  • Color Choices and Design Intricacy: Opting for diverse colors or detailed designs can extend labor hours, subsequently affecting the overall cost.
  • Total Area to be Covered: Typically, the cost per square meter might decrease for larger areas due to labor and material efficiencies, contrasting with smaller spaces.
  • Professionalism and Expertise: The skill level of the professional applying the microcement is paramount. While seasoned experts guarantee top-notch results, their services might be on the pricier side.
  • Quality of the Material: Investing in high-grade microcement might be costlier upfront but ensures a lasting and superior finish.

Incorporating these insights into your decision-making process can help in understanding the comprehensive cost structure of microcement installations.

Comparing Microcement Costs with Other Materials

When delving into the world of interior and exterior finishes, one can’t help but compare the costs of various materials. Tiles, wood, and other traditional materials have been the go-to for years. However, microcement has emerged as a strong contender in recent times. Not only does it offer a unique aesthetic appeal, but when you factor in the longevity, maintenance, and installation benefits, microcement often proves to be a cost-effective and efficient choice.

Traditional materials, while tried and tested, come with their own set of challenges. The removal of existing surfaces, the time-consuming installation processes, and the often dated finishes can be deterrents. Enter microcement. With no need for removal of the previous surface, the application process becomes significantly quicker. Moreover, the sleek, modern finish that microcement provides is hard to achieve with conventional materials. This seamless and contemporary look, combined with its durability, positions microcement as a preferred choice over traditional materials.

Microcement price range

Understanding the microcement price is crucial for budgeting your project. Based on industry standards and varying factors, the average price for microcement application typically ranges between $100 and $180 per square metre.

This cost, however, can fluctuate depending on size where usually discounts would be in place, location, and any preparation needed (eg.: Epoxy over plywood boards)

Making an Informed Decision

In the realm of construction and design, choices abound. Microcement, with its myriad of advantages, stands out as a blend of beauty, functionality, and cost-effectiveness. It’s not just about the initial investment but the long-term benefits it brings in terms of maintenance, aesthetics, and adaptability. By thoroughly understanding the factors that influence its cost and the unparalleled benefits it offers, homeowners and designers alike can make an informed decision. Whether you’re renovating a space or starting from scratch, microcement offers a solution that marries innovation with practicality, ensuring your project not only looks stunning but stands the test of time.

Application Process of Microcement

At Topcret®, we use a specialized microcement application process designed to avoid microcement problems, ensure a high-quality, long-lasting finish for your microcement project. Here is a step-by-step guide to our application process.

To guarantee the best results with Topcret microcement products, all installations are performed by our highly-trained, certified professionals. Rely on our skilled team to deliver exceptional, long-lasting microcement surfaces for your home or business. Trust Topcret for quality and excellence.

1 | Surface Preparation

The surface to be covered with microcement must be clean, dry, and free of any dust, grease, or other contaminants. We will repair any existing damage, such as cracks or holes, to ensure a smooth surface.

2 | Primer Application

A primer is applied to the surface to create an ideal bonding surface for the microcement. The primer can be customized to match the color of the microcement being applied.

3 | Microcement Mixing

Our team of professionals will mix the microcement with water and any desired pigments to achieve the desired color and texture. We use high-quality, eco-friendly microcement products to ensure the best results.

4 | First Microcement Application

The microcement is applied to the surface in a thin layer, which will be left to dry for a certain amount of time before the second application.

5 | Second Microcement Application

After the first layer has dried, a second layer of microcement is applied to the surface. This layer will be slightly thicker than the first and will create the desired texture and finish.

6 | Sealing and Finishing

Once the microcement has fully cured, we will apply a sealer to protect the surface from stains and damage. We can also apply a finishing wax or oil to create a unique look and feel for your project.

Microcement Across Australia

Why Australia is Embracing Microcement

Australia’s design landscape spans coastal homes, inner-city apartments, and heritage buildings, and microcement has found a natural place across all of them. In a country where indoor-outdoor living shapes so much of residential and commercial design, microcement offers a seamless, contemporary finish that carries through from an alfresco terrace to an open-plan interior without a single joint or seam. Its versatility suits both new builds and renovations, without compromising the character of established homes. Moreover, Australia’s climate demands materials that are both durable and low-maintenance. Microcement, with its seamless appearance and weather-resistant nature, fits the bill perfectly, making it a sought-after choice for homeowners, designers, and architects around the country. The nationwide ban on engineered stone benchtops, in effect since July 2024, has also pushed many homeowners and kitchen designers to look at microcement as a seamless benchtop alternative that doesn’t require slab replacement.

FAQs

TOPCRET’s responses.

In most cases, no. Because microcement installation doesn’t involve demolition and generates minimal debris, most Australian councils don’t require a permit or development approval for a straightforward resurfacing project. Requirements do vary by state and council, so it’s worth checking with your local authority if your renovation involves structural changes. The result is visible almost immediately, and after 24 hours the surface is accessible for circulation.

Due to the great adhesion of both, it is possible to apply them on practically any type of stable surface: ceramics, porcelain, cement mortar, tiles, plaster, plasterboard, marble…. By not having to remove the existing material, a quick renovation of the spaces can be achieved, saving time and money.

There are a variety of products applicable to stairs. All Topcret products are highly versatile so only a few technical details need to be considered for easy application.

All Topcret products can be installed on exterior surfaces provided precautions are taken to properly waterproof the bases where the coatings are applied. With these measures plus a correct planimetry, rising damp and accumulations of water on the surface are avoided.

Topcret not only makes its own furniture but also offers the possibility of covering furniture designed by its clients.

Due to the inherent movement of wooden or parquet floors, it is necessary to remove them prior to placing the Microcemento® or Baxab®.

All Topcret coatings can be slip resistant by a superficial application of the T / Grip product developed in Topcret T / Labs Laboratories. In Australia, wet area slip resistance is typically assessed against the AS 4586 standard, and the anti-slip graduation of your microcement finish can be adjusted to suit the classification required for your project.

Both Microcemento® and Baxab® are fully compatible with underfloor heating systems and precautions should only be taken when conditioning the application base. For more information on how to prepare the base, consult any Topcret office.
